Poetry Wanders In...

We love to host traveling poets in Toledo. And this Thursday, John Amen of North Carolina reads from his newest collection at the newly opened Wandering Bean coffeeshop in West Toledo, along with poets One Single Rose®️, Dan Denton and Tim Geiger.

Join us this Thursday, April 11th from 6-8pm at Wandering Bean, 1119 W Sylvania Ave, Toledo, OH 43612. All welcome. No cover charge.

John Amen is the author of five collections of poetry, including Illusion of an Overwhelm, finalist for the 2018 Brockman-Campbell Award, and work from which was chosen as a finalist for the 2018 Dana Award. He was the recipient of the 2021 Jack Grapes Poetry Prize. His poems and prose have appeared recently in Rattle, Prairie Schooner, American Literary Review, Tupelo Quarterly, and Los Angeles Review, and his poetry has been translated into Spanish, French, Hungarian, Korean, and Hebrew. His music, literary, and film reviews appear widely in such publications as Colorado Review, No Depression, Beats Per Minute, and PopMatters. He founded and is managing editor of Pedestal Magazine. His new collection, Dark Souvenirs, will be released by New York Quarterly Books in 2024.

He'll be joined by Detroit poet One Single Rose®️ who will be sharing her Flyku For You. Flyku is her personal spin on haiku, an ancient poetic form of poetry based on nature, et al. Based on one handwritten word from audience members on sticky notes, she creates 17 syllable custom poems and inspirational quotes on the fly by typing on a 1955 Remington Riter, collecting tips or giving the pieces away as gifts. No two flyku are alike!

Toledo's favorite traveling poet/novelist Dan Denton will be here too! Dan is a former union autoworker and UAW Chief Steward turned full-time writer. He has three books: $100 a Week Motel (Punk Hostage Press, 2022); Bury My Heart in the Gutter (EMP Press, 2018); and Give Us This Day Our Daily Grind: an Ode to the American Factory Worker (Lunch Bucket Brigade, 2020.) And our favorite gentleman farmer/professor Tim Geiger will share work from his newest collection also. Timothy Geiger is the author of the poetry collection Weatherbox, winner of the 2019 Vern Rutsala Poetry Prize from Cloudbank Books. He has also published the full-length collections, The Curse of Pheromones (Main Street Rag, 2008) and Blue Light Factory (Spoon River Poetry Press, 1997) and ten chapbooks, most recently, Holler (APoGee Press, 2021). His work has been the recipient of a Pushcart Prize XVII, a Holt, Rinehart and Winston Award in Literature, and many state and local grants in Alabama, Minnesota, and Ohio. He is also the proprietor of the literary fine-press Aureole Press at the University of Toledo, where he teaches creative writing, poetry, and letterpress printing. He lives on a farm in Northwest Ohio with his wife, raising goats, pigs, chickens and ducks.
